OFF AIR: Disrupting the Stream
Who gets nostalgic for dial tones and busy signals? The TV never goes off air, now. 'news' 24 hours a day, and that beeeep of OFF AIR is never heard.
No ending bells,
no chimes that disrupt the constant influx of 'news'. Did you ever for a moment get entranced by the texture of that tone? What made it less important than the call? Maybe you never even made the call. 24 hour news now, and what gets you to stop? Stop and notice that something you didn't think would end, had ended, and in fact...ended many years ago, with your hardly noticing.
Not hearing the sound again, until I am reminded.
What about disaster and tremendous suffering? Could remembering the sound of the busy signal or the snow at the end of the nights programming disrupt the stream? Just for a moment, can we opt into a way of being that robs hindsight of its glory? News is plural for 'the new something-happening'. If I call up 'suffering in the world', can I be prepared to hear, We're sorry, but your call could not be completed as dialed. Please check the number and dial again" Am I willing to create a broadcast from the top of the news? #unprecedented #letthegoodwolfin #thenewnew #lizardmusic
